Predrilled gauges on tanks

Predrilled holes are common in home heating oil tanks for the installation of oil tank gauges. These predrilled holes are covered by a cap if a gauge is not required.

If you have removed an old oil gauge system from your tank, check that the hole is covered and not open to the elements. This small hole can allow a significant amount of rain water to enter the tank and build up.

Water is the heavier liquid and always separates from oil so it will be sitting in a layer at the bottom of the tank. If you have a lot of water in the bottom of your oil tank, it could reach the level of the outlet pipe, enter your heating system and damage the pump.

If you suspect you have water in your oil tank, call Pat on 087 2364500.
